Project
Tourism, consumption and mobility. An economical-statistical perspective” intends to study innovative solutions for the management of tourist destinations and the use of cultural heritage deriving from an in-depth knowledge of mobility in tourist destinations and from the analysis of tourist behaviour. The new technologies, mainly GPS-based localization and positioning systems, enable a very accurate spatial and temporal reconstruction of the activities carried out by visitors in terms of attractions visited, consumer choices, individual and group preferences. All this information, when combined with more traditional data collection methods, offers enormous opportunities for the tourism and heritage sector, contributing to the development of cultural heritage conservation and management policies and, more generally, to an improvement in the management of tourist destinations. The project also includes empirical research in two tourist destinations, Copenhagen and Palermo, which analysed tourist mobility in terms of identification of more general mobility and behavioural patterns and of the impacts and effects they produce on land use and heritage destination management.

Financial Resources
The project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under the “Innovative Industrial Doctorates” Action, Cycle XXXIV – Academic Year 2018-2019. For the implementation of this initiative, the University of Palermo, which received 85.743,06 euro in funding, established a 3-year doctoral scholarship in Economics and Statistics at the Department of Economics, Business and Statistics.

Impact
The project falls within the “Tourism, Cultural Heritage and Creativity Industry” specialization area and has a high degree of innovation with significant positive effects on the tourism industry. The aim is to create a professional highly skilled in the use, enhancement, promotion and management of tourist destinations and who is able to carry out research and implementation activities regarding cultural heritage management strategies based on an in-depth analysis of visitor behaviour in the destinations analysed. In addition, the PhD student will develop skills related to the most suitable technological solutions for the acquisition of the information necessary for a responsible management of tourism flows, responding to the growing demand from the tourism industry for specific information on tourist mobility and activities (including places and times).
The project includes a 6-month placement at Errequadro, a Sicilian company specializing in tourism marketing, tourist destination management and organization of tourist services, and a 6-month placement at the Department of Culture and Global Studies, Aalborg University, Denmark, with a tutor who is an expert in tourism management and marketing and collaborative economy and who has an in-depth knowledge of Copenhagen’s tourism and economic system.
