The ECSEL (Electronics Components and Systems for European Leadership) Joint Technology Initiative is the main pillar of the EU's industrial strategy in the field of electronics. ECSEL is implemented through the ECSEL "Joint Undertaking (JU)" established by the Council Regulation (EU) No 561/2014 of 6 May 2014 to support research, development and innovation projects in the fields of nanoelectronics, embedded systems and smart integrated systems.

One of the aims of the ECSEL JU is to contribute to the implementation of the Horizon 2020 programme and, in particular, of the "Leadership in Enabling and Industrial Technologies" work programme, within the "Industrial Leadership" pillar, through the definition of targeted calls and with the aim of increasing the "leverage" effect of public funds on private investment.

To contribute to this strategy, the NOP on Research and Innovation 2014-2020, under the Action II.3 - "Thematic Projects - Key Enabling Technologies - KETs", allocated ERDF funds of about 15 million euro to the co-funding of the ECSEL-2016-1 RIA (Research and Innovation Actions) call, mainly focused on industrial research and experimental development activities and, to a lesser extent, on innovation activities and, secondarily, to the co-funding of the ECSEL-2016-2-IA call.

The additional ERDF resources committed by the NOP on Research and Innovation to the call, which is open to less developed regions (Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Puglia, Sicily) and transition regions (Abruzzo, Molise, Sardinia), will allow industries, research organizations and universities to take part in important international cooperation projects in highly strategic industrial sectors, in line with the National Smart Specialization Strategy, and having a potential economic and social impact.
