With Directorial Decree no. 1735 of 13 July 2017, the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) published a notice regarding the allocation of 497 million euro to industrial research and experimental development projects in the 12 specialization areas identified by the National Research Programme (NRP) 2015-2020.
The overall budget uses resources from the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 (327 million euro) and the Development and Cohesion Fund (170 million euro).

In implementation of Axis II of the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020, the MIUR intends to create and promote an ecosystem that supports a “bottom up” development of relevant projects through forms of public-private partnership that integrate, connect and enhance knowledge in the field of research and innovation.

Applications must be submitted online via the portal SIRIO (http://roma.cilea.it/Sirio) between 27 July and 9 November 2017 by companies, universities, public research bodies, public and private research organizations, public administrations and any other entity meeting the requirements set out in the notice, pursuant to art. 5, para. 1 of MD 593/2016. Eligible entities, forming public-private partnerships, may apply for funding of projects worth between 3 and 10 million euro.

The activities must take place in the southern regions. However, in accordance with art. 70 of Regulation (EU) 1303/2013, a share of the resources of the NOP Research and Innovation is intended to finance activities that may also be carried out in the remaining central and northern regions, provided that the activities are for the benefit of the southern regions in terms of employment, capacity to attract investment and skills, enhancement of business competitiveness and exploitation of research results.

By Directorial Decree no. 1811 of 30 September 2019, Dr Gianluigi Consoli, Office VIII, Directorate-General for Research Coordination, Promotion and Valorization, was appointed Person responsible for the tender procedure for the selection of Industrial Research and Experimental Development Projects in the 12 specialization areas identified in the NRP 2015-2020 (D.D. no. 1735 of 13 July 2017).
