Project
Advanced Analysis and Integration of Remote Sensing and In Situ Data for a Flood Monitoring System” makes use of advanced techniques for (both optical and radar) satellite data processing for the monitoring of flood events. Through the application of these advanced techniques, the research aims to contribute to the enhancement of a global and innovative methodology for the production of automated and operational monitoring systems.

Financial Resources
This research project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under the action Innovative Industrial Doctorates, cycle XXXII (Academic Year 2016-2017). For the implementation of this initiative, the University of Bari, which received 89.871,54 euro in funding, has instituted a 3-year doctoral scholarship in Geosciences at the Department of Earth and Geo-Environmental Sciences.

Impact
The project is in line with two of the five national priority technological development trajectories as defined in the National Smart Specialization Strategy document:

  • Aerospace and Defence, in particular: “Earth Observation Systems in the field of missions, instruments and data processing”
  • Digital Agenda, Smart Communities, Smart Mobility Systems, in particular: “Systems for safety in urban environments, environmental monitoring and prevention of critical or hazardous events”.

The project includes a 12-month period at Planetek Italia, a company based in Bari which carries out research in the field of satellite remote sensing data processing and in general in the processing, sharing and archiving of geospatial data, as well as a 12-month period at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). The project results, highly informative operational products in the field of environmental risk, may be of great interest in various sectors, such as insurance, environmental risk management, civil protection and the whole remote sensing industry aiming at the development and engineering of high value-added products derived from remote sensing data.
