Project

Development of Innovative Active Packaging (Antimicrobial/Antioxidant) with Low Environmental Impact for the Preservation and Safety of Food Products” aims to identify new active biodegradable materials able to ensure the preservation and safety of food products while developing a packaging technology with low environmental impact. The project also aims to improve the functional properties of biopolymers, which are currently not competitive with materials of petrochemical origin. The chemical kinetics of the different food categories will also be studied in order to slow down the quality deterioration of food products.

Financial Resources
The project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under the action Innovative Industrial Doctorates, cycle XXXIII - Academic Year 2017-2018. The University of Naples “Federico II”, which was funded with 85.743,06 euro, has instituted a 3-year doctoral scholarship at the Department of Food Science and Technology for the implementation of this initiative.

Impact
The project falls within the thematic area “Agrifood”, and partly within the area “Green Chemistry”, both identified by the National Smart Specialization Strategy, and responds to the demand for innovative eco-friendly materials included in the “Smart and Sustainable Industry, Energy and Environment” sector.
The project includes a 6-month period with the company Icimendue, based in Marcianise, and a 6-month period at UMR-IATE-Agropolymer Engineering and Emerging Technology – INRA in Montpellier.
