“Reuse and Valorization of By-Products and Waste Materials of the Sicilian Citrus Industry” aims to enhance the value of the Sicilian citrus fruit chain through the identification of alternative uses of sub-products and waste materials from industrial processing. These substances can be used both as safe methods for food preservation and to create new products with high nutraceutical value.
The project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under the action Innovative Industrial Doctorates, cycle XXXII – Academic Year 2016-2017. The University of Palermo, which received 83.267,02 euro in funding, has instituted a 3-year doctoral scholarship at the Department of Agricultural and Forest Sciences for the implementation of this initiative.
The project falls within the thematic areas “Sustainable Industry, Energy and Environment” and “Health, Nutrition and Quality of Life”, identified by the National Smart Specialization Strategy. The project includes a 6-month period with the company Eurofood and a 6-month period at Istituto Agroforestal Mediterràneo de la Universitat Politècnica in València.
