Project
“Tendinopathies and development of innovative biomimetic materials. Towards the new frontiers of regenerative medicine”
aims to contribute to the advancement of medical devices for the improvement of tendon regeneration by developing innovative strategies. The project’s innovation consists in the production of synthetic constructs that mimic the architecture of the tendon using biopolymers that are already in use for the production of medical devices and that have been preliminarily tested for biocompatibility with AECs (amniotic epithelial stem cells). The research also focuses on the optimization of tendon tissue decellularization methods that preserve the bioactive molecules and stem cell niches in the tendon. The preservation of these factors is an enormous advantage for the tissue regeneration process.

Financial Resources
This research project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under the action Innovative Industrial Doctorates, cycle XXXII (Academic Year 2016-2017). For the implementation of this initiative, the University of Teramo, which received 90,156,56 euro in funding, has instituted a 3-year doctoral scholarship at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology.

Impact
The project falls within the “Health, Nutrition and Quality of Life” Area. In line with the NSSS, it intends to contribute to the enhancement of research and production in the field of human health protection through the training and specialization of new human resources able to address the dynamic challenges coming from the world of research and production. The importance of regenerative medicine and innovation in the production of biomaterials is confirmed by the funding allocated by the EU within Life Science H2020 Advanced Materials and Biotechnology and Clinical Research on Regenerative Medicine. The project includes a 6-month period at Assut Europe S.p.A., a company based in Magliano dei Marsi (L’Aquila) active in the production of certified and high-quality biomedical devices, and a 12-month period at Innovent, a recognized German industrial research centre.
