Agrifood, Sustainable Strategies for Cereal Production under Study at the University of Foggia

ITA | ENG

Project
The research project carried out within the Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences of the University of Foggia falls within the Agrifood specialization area and involves two researchers.
The project focuses on the evaluation of the impact of sustainable agronomic strategies applied to Mediterranean cereal systems on the technological, nutritional and health quality of products through a smart farming approach. The proposed innovation involves the integration of field phenotyping with digital systems for the acquisition of physiological and vegetation indices in order to identify the real nutritional requirements of crops for a sustainable quality production, in line with the objectives of FAO’s Climate-Smart Agriculture. Samples cereal and legume crops typical of the Mediterranean environment will also be used to establish best practices in the management of biotechnologies depending on experimental results, for the formulation of model foods from the typical cereal derivatives of Mediterranean systems: sourdoughs; functional beverages (e.g. yogurt-like, kefir-like); pasta and couscous.

Financial Resources
The project is funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under Action 1.2 “Researcher Mobility”, Call “Attraction and International Mobility of Researchers” (AIM) with a total budget of 372.043,23 euro for the recruitment of two researchers on fixed-term contracts.

Impact
The project aims to improve the competitiveness of cereal production, a leading sector in the national agrifood industry, by developing new product design of innovative formulated products, improving nutritional and functional quality, extending shelf life and safety through biotechnology solutions and improving organoleptic properties. The aim is to promote a consumer-oriented innovation regime while improving the environmental, economic and social sustainability of agrifood production systems. In line with EU guidelines, compliance with the horizontal principles (sustainable development, gender equality and non-discrimination) is ensured by both the scientific merit of the activities and the implementation of Human Resource policies, consistent with the HR Excellence in Research Award received by the University of Foggia.
