Project
The project involves the upgrading of the entire Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) research infrastructure with the aim of providing the scientific community with the instrumentation necessary to allow the study of the Universe at high radio frequencies, while ensuring high-sensitivity observations through the mitigation of systematic effects due to gravity and non-systematic effects due to wind and temperature variations. The upgrade requires the acquisition of new and sophisticated technologies in cross-cutting sectors such as microwave electronics, precision metrology, sensor technology and supercomputing. The devices to be acquired, from the microwave receiving systems to the sophisticated monitoring and control systems of the surface of the radio telescope’s primary reflector and of the entire mechanical structure, as well as the enabling platforms for analysis and access to the observation databases, form the basis of modern mechatronics and have interdisciplinary applications in the control systems of large industries, in High Performance Computing (HPC) and, in general, in all industrial activities requiring precision sensors.

Financial Resources
The project was funded with 18.683.000 euro by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under the action “Enhancement of Research Infrastructures” which supports projects aimed at the upgrading of 18 research infrastructures identified as priorities by the Ministry of University and Research in the PNIR 2014-2020, covering one or more ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) areas and having a significant impact on the trajectories of the National Smart Specialization Strategy, in particular in the Areas “Digital Agenda”, “Smart Communities”, “Smart Mobility Systems” and “Aerospace and Defence”.

Impact on the Territory
The beneficiary of the funding is the National Institute for Astrophysics, with operational headquarters in the Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari-San Basilio. The Observatory, together with the nearby University Citadel and the SRT, is a major attractor of international scientific and technological interest, with significant benefits at both regional and national level, while having enormous potential within the industrial sectors and on the market. The opportunities offered by the SRT have led to the establishment in Sardinia of solid research groups that have expanded over time attracting young researchers from across the world, including through the delivery of targeted programmes funded by Regione Sardegna and European Research Council. In terms of technology transfer, the industrial sector, including small and medium enterprises, will benefit from the new innovative solutions by bringing the proposed technological applications into strategic sectors such as mechatronics, precision sensors, telecommunications and HPC, as well as in security and biomedicine.
