Project
“COGITO - A Cognitive Dynamic System to Allow Buildings to Learn and Adapt” focuses on the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) with cognitive dynamic systems (CDSs) with the aim of improving the management of public and residential buildings with cognitive and self-developed functions.
The aim of the project is to combine IoT technology, cognitive computing, big data, machine learning and reasoning to help people live and work better in buildings by providing buildings with the ability to learn over time how to identify the cost areas with the highest impact and act in advance by performing programming, monitoring and control actions. New customized services will be developed which will take into account the occupants of the building, reduce costs through system optimization and automation and improving end-user satisfaction. The project will develop a Cognitive IoT (CIoT) architecture that will integrate thousands of sensors in buildings, will be able to learn about building behaviours and will intuitively assist users in detecting and mitigating unwanted events. Cognitive buildings will have to be able to analyse the use of space, monitor occupant comfort and generate smart building management systems. To this end, a new generation of smart devices, or “cognitive objects”, will be designed in order to improve the reliability, flexibility and granularity of the data provided.

Financial Resources
The project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under Axis II “Thematic Projects”, action “Clusters”, which finances industrial research and experimental development projects in the 12 specialization areas identified by the National Research Programme (NRP) 2015-2020, in particular in the “Technologies for Living Environments” specialization area. For the implementation of this initiative, a budget of 4.135.130,29 euro was allocated to the following beneficiaries:

  • University of CALABRIA
  • SITE SpA
  • ATERP Territorial Agency for Public Residential Building of Calabria
  • National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development
  • SMARTS Srl SPIN-OFF UNIRC
  • SCAI Lab Srl
  • Digimat Srl
  • DS TECH Srl
  • SI-LAB CALABRIA Scarl
  • CUEIM-University Consortium for Industrial and Managerial Economics
  • University of BASILICATA
  • Telecom Italia SpA
  • “Mediterranea” University of REGGIO CALABRIA

Impact on the Territory
In addition to the impact on employment, with the involvement of highly skilled professionals, the project will bring about higher levels of innovation in the production system. Enterprises will produce a competitive advantage for the territory and will ensure a better strategic positioning in the specialization area thanks to the development of an offer that targets the entire “smart home” market, with distribution channels that may involve both partner companies and the market in the global sense. The project will increase the number of large companies moving their research activities to the region on a permanent basis. The SMEs involved will benefit from collaboration with research institutions and large companies in terms of increased know-how, strategic relationships and opportunities to enter new markets. The project will also have an impact in technological and market terms, and will support the strengthening of the entrepreneurial system also in terms of internationalization and highly-skilled jobs, generated by both partner companies and new industrial start-ups and spin-offs focusing on the development of cognitive smart building automation solutions to meet growing demand.
