Project
“SENTINEL – Smart Dynamic Weighing System for the Management of Heavy Vehicles" aims to develop and build a smart integrated dynamic vehicle weighing system that, integrated with other systems, can contribute to a smart and predictive management of heavy vehicles whose load conditions are not compatible with road characteristics, and which can be directed to alternative roads in real time. The installation of the system near road infrastructure nodes, such as bridges, viaducts and difficult road sections due to altimetric and/or environmental/climate characteristics, enables the use of these systems for the predictive maintenance of infrastructures and to support checks of overloaded heavy vehicles. The project involves the development of an innovative dynamic weighing device and of SW/HW architectures for predictive models and automated or semi-automated decision-making strategies as well as the development of a demonstrator using predictive models and the related decision-making strategies to mitigate the impact of checks of heavy vehicles on traffic flows and safety.

Financial Resources
This 30-month project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under Axis II “Thematic Projects”, action “Clusters”, which finances industrial research and experimental development projects in the 12 specialization areas identified by the National Research Programme (NRP) 2015-2020, in particular in the “Sustainable Mobility” specialization area. For the implementation of this initiative, a budget of 2.253.874,57 euro was allocated to the following beneficiaries forming the public-private partnership:

  • ENEA - National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development;
  • TRAIN - Consortium for Research and Development for Innovative Transport Technologies;
  • TAKIUS Srl
  • ANAS (a single-shareholder joint-stock company)

Impact on the Territory
The SENTINEL system is an innovative solution that integrates the latest technologies based on fiber Bragg gratings with ICT systems for ITS, offering a solution to the increasingly pressing needs of road infrastructure managers and providing a competitive advantage in terms of smart roads to the actors involved and the Country as well. In addition, the device complies with recent provisions setting out the maximum authorized dimensions of vehicles circulating in national and international traffic and the maximum authorized weights in international traffic. In particular, by the Ministerial Decree of 6 April 2017 issued by the Minister of Transport, specific measures will be adopted by 2021 to identify and check overloaded road vehicles.
As well as developing models for the creation of smart sensors, the project includes the development of solutions for the creation of rapid and precise support systems able to intervene only on vehicles exceeding weight limits or only when the total weight of all the vehicles driving along the monitored stretch of road exceeds weight limits. The output of the SENTINEL project, built in prototype form and for demonstrative installations, has strong potential to penetrate the national market and to be used abroad, considering the extension of the European motorway network. The industrialization and marketing of the product will foster the creation of skilled jobs in the ITS and ICT sectors in the SENTINEL project partner companies, in particular in their facilities based in the convergence regions involved in the project.
