ADAL - AUTOMATIC DETECTION OF ABATTOIR LESIONS

ITA | ENG

Project
“ADAL- AUTOMATIC DETECTION OF ABATTOIR LESIONS” aims to develop a system for the automatic detection of lesions and for the scoring of carcasses at slaughterhouses. It represents the first application of Artificial Intelligence to disease monitoring in veterinary medicine. Based on the various needs identified along the entire slaughterhouse chain, ADAL intends to provide an AI-based system that automatically scores respiratory diseases in slaughtered pigs. The technology involves the installation of a robot workstation able to acquire images of the animals along the slaughtering chain. These images are saved on a local server and then transferred to the cloud to be analysed using the AI software. The images acquired can be further analysed, either on-site or remotely, by veterinarians and remain accessible on-demand in the system’s archive. The results of the analysis can be made available to all interested parties, such as slaughterhouses, farmers, veterinarians, pharmaceutical companies and government agencies.

Financial Resources
This project obtained 430,110 euro in funding from the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under Action “Thematic Projects - Key Enabling Technologies – KETs” through the Fund of Funds for Research and Innovation managed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and established to increase investment in research and development. The EU resources available to the Fund of Funds are invested through one or more financial intermediaries and may take the form of loans, equity or quasi-equity, or equivalent instruments. In this case, the investment is in the form of a loan.

Impact on the Territory
The project falls within the “Agrifood” specialization area and involves the enabling technology of Advanced Manufacturing Systems. The beneficiary of the funding is Farm4Trade, a company based in Atessa, near Chieti, in Abruzzo, which develops technological solutions for farmers and public and private institutions active in the livestock sector. The ADAL technology allows farmers, health authorities and pharmaceutical companies to have a full understanding of what is happening on farms and to take action to improve animal health and welfare. Interest from industry in the proposed solution is very strong, especially from leading companies in this field, and the potential revenue generated by bringing the ADAL technology to international markets is considerable when compared to the high number (1.5 billion) of pigs slaughtered each year worldwide. By establishing itself as a technological leader in the international agribusiness market, F4T has a concrete growth opportunity on the horizon, with the forecast of reaching a turnover of around 6 million euro in 2023 following the commercialization of the prototype in Europe, thanks to the agreement signed with Zoetis, a multinational that specializes in the development of drugs and vaccines for livestock treatment.
