Project
“ADAS+” (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) aims to develop an innovative safe driving assistance demonstrator for real time and continuous monitoring of the driver’s psychophysical state, including the level of alcohol intoxication, and of air quality in the passenger compartment. This is achieved through the use of silicon-based technologies, advanced image processing algorithms and nano-structured materials integrated into a common platform that meets the safe driving standards required for next generation “smart” cars.
This objective will be pursued through the development of three advanced prototype technology modules based on innovative technology platforms. For example, silicon miniaturized optical probes based on SiPM (silicon photomultiplier) technology will be integrated into the steering wheel to monitor the driver’s level of attention through the real time control of the heart rate and its variability. The project includes visible light and IR light micro-cameras able to detect signs of fatigue or irritability, Silicon Radar/Lidar devices able to recognize external obstacles, and environmental microchip sensors for air quality control in the passenger compartment. The modules will be integrated into a final ADAS+ control unit demonstrator that will be validated in a test car.
Financial Resources
The project was funded under the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020, Axis II “Thematic Projects”, Action “Clusters” which finances industrial research and experimental development projects in the 12 specialization areas identified by the National Research Programme (PNR) 2015-2020, in particular in the “Sustainable Mobility” specialization area. For the implementation of this initiative, a budget of 4.369.839,01 euro was allocated to the following beneficiaries:
- STMicroelectronics Srl
- University of Catania
- Distretto Tecnologico Sicilia Micro e Nano Sistemi Scarl
- INNOVAAL Scarl
- INSTM – National Interuniversity Consortium for Materials Science and Technology
- MTASpA
- University "G. d’Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara
- National Interuniversity Consortium for Nanoelectronics
Impact on the Territory
ADAS systems fall within the automotive electronics sector, a fast-growing sector due to the adoption of new quality and technology standards at industrial level and to the application of safety rules to reduce the number of accidents. Both the European Union and the United States are gradually introducing new rules to ensure that all vehicles are equipped with autonomous emergency braking systems and forward collision warning systems by 2020. The project will have a significant impact in terms of creation of innovation processes in public-private partnerships and from a strictly industrial point of view as well. Thanks to the introduction into the automotive market of innovative ADAS solutions deriving from the planned research activities, the industrial partners will gain market positions and a leading role in the medium and long term while the SMEs will strengthen their technical skills, also increasing the current employment rates.
