AMICO (Medical Assistance In COntextual Awareness)

ITA | ENG

Project
AMICO
, Medical Assistance In COntextual Awareness, aims to develop an infrastructure, called “instrumented environment”, consisting of a person and his/her domestic environment, both equipped with sensors, a telemedicine platform (in the Internet of Things environment) and a robot that acts as a mediator between the person, the surrounding environment and the external environment. This infrastructure provides both services for people in their domestic environment, monitoring their behaviour and psycho-physical state, and telemedicine services for the remote monitoring by doctors and caregivers of patients receiving rehabilitation therapies. As a result, patients will feel reassured and more motivated to continue with their therapy. The project involves the development of a new wearable ultrasonic sensor for the measurement of haemodynamic parameters and of a temperature sensor. Artificial intelligence-based systems will be developed for patient-environment and patient-robot interaction (brain-computer interface sensors). An enabling platform will also be developed which will collect patient information and data provided by the robot, around which innovative telemedicine services will be developed to be integrated with decision support systems.

Financial Resources
The project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under Axis II “Thematic Projects”, Action “Clusters” which finances industrial research and experimental development projects in the 12 specialization areas identified by the National Research Programme (PNR) 2015-2020, in particular in the “Technologies for Living Environments” specialization area. For the implementation of this initiative, a budget of 3.881.392,42 euro was allocated to the following beneficiaries:

  • STMicroelectronics Srl
  • eHealthNet Scarl
  • Polytechnic University of Bari
  • Polytechnic University of Milan
  • University of Florence
  • University of Roma Tre
  • NETCOM GROUP SpA

Impact on the Territory
This type of patient care, especially for elderly patients with cardiovascular disease in the post-discharge and follow-up period, is a novelty in the national context. The real-time acquisition of clinical data combined with facial expression analysis will allow doctors to follow their patients, monitor medication compliance and recognize a worsening of the clinical picture. The efficacy of this system can lead to a reduction in the incidence of cardiac complications and consequently in the number of hospital admissions, thus saving the National Health Service money. In addition, the processes, technologies and protocols developed for this project will enrich the know-how of the partners and will boost the development of the socioeconomic system of the target regions. In fact, the industrialization of the new products/services is expected to have a positive impact on employment. The project is expected to lead to the creation of spin-offs and small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the field of Technologies for Living Environments. An increase in the number of research grants is expected for the research laboratories of public bodies.
