NADITEMM

ITA | ENG

Project
NADITEMM (New Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approaches for Dysmetabolic Syndrome) is aimed at identifying new antimicrobial compounds of natural origin to be used in human therapy (AMPs) and as preservatives in the cosmeceutical production chain (plant extracts). The antimicrobial (antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal) activity of the compounds studied will be evaluated in both in vitro and in vivo models. The tests will be carried out using highly innovative technologies applied to the fields of botany, entomology, chemistry and microbiology and making extensive use of enabling technologies (KETs), in particular biotechnology. The project’s experimental activities will lead to the development of new antimicrobial compounds obtained from insects to be used as antibacterials, antivirals and antifungals. New plant extracts will also be obtained to be used in cosmeceuticals as extremely safe, non-toxic, well-tolerated and highly innovative preservatives. In addition, the project will generate new knowledge, shared among the partners, about innovative methods for the extraction of peptides from insects and mixtures from plants, the antimicrobial activity of the extracted compounds, the mechanism of action of the active compounds and their toxicity to humans. The products developed during the project fully meet the high demand for antimicrobials that do not cause resistance and that can be used in combination with conventional antibiotics and disinfectants.

Financial Resources
The project was funded by the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020 under Axis II “Thematic Projects”, action “Clusters”, which finances industrial research and experimental development projects in the 12 specialization areas identified by the National Research Programme (NRP) 2015-2020, in particular in the “Health” specialization area. For the implementation of this initiative, a budget of 3.412.928,50 euro was allocated to the following beneficiaries:

  • Consorzio Pitecnobio
  • Bionap Srl
  • “Magna Graecia” University of Catanzaro
  • Biotecnomed Scarl

Impact on the Territory
The expected results of the project, falling within the “Health” specialization area, will provide a significant contribution to innovation and productivity in the target regions (primarily in Calabria and Sicily), which will be disseminated starting from the companies involved in the project, with significant benefits for the territory resulting from the creation of synergies with other companies and related industries. The increased competitiveness that the industrial partners will derive from the experimental activities will increase the need for internal workforce and promote attraction of investment and skills to the target regions. The experimental activities, the expected investments, the marketing of the products and the hiring of personnel will provide important socio-economic benefits to the convergence regions involved in the project, leading to an increase in the regional GDP. The participation of industrial partners and public research institutions will enable close collaboration between research system and production system, promoting the internalization of innovation and the approach to research, increasing the level of innovation through the definition of skills and technology transfer channels in the target territories.
