PER-ACTRIS-IT

ITA | ENG

Project
ACTRIS (Aerosols, Clouds, and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure) is a pan-European research infrastructure supporting atmospheric science research. It provides tools to address current and future socio-economic challenges, such as those relating to air quality, climate change and protection from environmental risks. ACTRIS results from more than 15 years of research at national and European level within the EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme.
The end goal of the PER-ACTRIS-IT strengthening project is, on the one hand, to increase the competitiveness of the Italian component of ACTRIS in Europe by supporting the growth of the national scientific community in the field of atmospheric science research and, on the other hand, to make our country more attractive and extend access to the infrastructure for a large number of foreign researchers. The project involves the upgrading of the entire research infrastructure, contributing in particular to the following lines of action: acquisition of the instrumentation needed to manage access to the infrastructure; increase in the calculation, storage and security capacity of the Data Centre; purchase of state-of-the-art instrumentation for Lidar calibration; upgrade of the LABEC accelerator beam lines aimed at improving elemental composition analysis with special sensitivity for natural aerosols.

Financial Resources
The project received 19.998.000,33 euro in funding from the “NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020”, under the “Enhancement of Research Infrastructures” action which supports projects aimed at the upgrading of 18 research infrastructures identified as priorities by the Ministry of University and Research in the PNIR 2014-2020, covering one or more ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) Areas and having a significant impact on the trajectories of the National Smart Specialization Strategy, in particular in the following Areas: Health, Nutrition, Quality of Life; Digital Agenda, Smart Communities, Smart Mobility Systems; Aerospace and Defence.

Impact on the Territory
The beneficiary of the funding is the National Research Council, in particular the ACTRIS research infrastructure, included in the ESFRI Roadmap 2016 and among the priority infrastructures for the European scientific community based on its level of excellence and scientific maturity. The PER-ACTRIS-IT project will contribute to strengthening the infrastructure located in Italy in order to ensure competitive services at European level, in line with the parameters identified by the ESFRI FORUM. The project will also enhance the impact and relevance of research activities and facilities in the field of international atmospheric science, climate and air quality studies, also encouraging the analysis of natural and anthropogenic hazards (e.g. forest fires, sandstorms, volcanic ash dispersion, acute pollution events, etc.) having significant social, environmental and economic impacts.
