Project
LifeWatchPLUS - LifeWatch, e-Science European Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research aims to develop and reinforce the e-Science LifeWatch-ITA infrastructure by:

  • Reinforcing in terms of extension the existing research infrastructure;
  • Reinforcing the entire research infrastructure;
  • Reinforcing a limited part of the research infrastructure.

The entire electronic infrastructure will be reinforced with targeted actions focused on the data centres, the communication centre, the technical infrastructure consisting of data mining, standardization, aggregation, interoperability e-services, query, analysis and modelling services, as well as on virtual research environments that have been integrated with data and services, and on the data infrastructure. The project also involves the reinforcement of the Communication Centre, Service Centre and Data Centre of LifeWatch-ITA and the creation of a national hub for data resources on biodiversity and ecosystems.

Financial Resources
The project received 7.887.580,64 euro in funding from the NOP Research and Innovation 2014-2020, under the “Enhancement of Research Infrastructures” action which supports projects aimed at the upgrading of 18 research infrastructures identified as priorities by the Ministry of University and Research in the PNIR 2014-2020, covering one or more ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) areas and having a significant impact on the trajectories of the National Smart Specialization Strategy.

Impact on the Territory
The proponent of the funding application is the National Research Council, with its operational headquarters at CNR Nanotec and CNR ISAC in Lecce. The other proponents are:

  • University of Bologna
  • National Institute for Nuclear Physics
  • University of Salento – Apulia

The main objectives of the project are based on both national and European/global considerations. At the national level, biodiversity and ecosystem research is highly fragmented, with several relevant initiatives only partially interrelated and a relatively low international visibility despite the fact that Italian researchers are highly respected internationally. In addition, data collected by national research groups are even more fragmented and there are few data collection centres and portals available at national level and a very low level of data aggregation (most data being either not available or not accessible). It has been estimated that over 90% of biodiversity data is not shared. This proportion is even higher in Italy, with low international visibility of data produced by national research groups. The reinforcement of the hub is aimed at filling a gap at the national level by reducing biodiversity and ecosystem research fragmentation and raising the visibility of research carried out by Italian groups. In addition, the full implementation of the FAIR principles in the distributed LifeWatch-ITA Data Centre will make data collected and organized by Italian research groups, including citizen science groups , accessible, interoperable and reusable at local and global levels.
